Ring of Truth

It is well documented that I when I pay attention to something, I focus. Small example: Our deck needed to be coated with water sealer. I completed the task in a couple of hours of non-stop effort. Done, and done well, as the subsequent beading of rain water attested. As my Aunt Lily(may she rest!) used to say, “That Pamela, when she puts her mind to something…” The thing is, I am whimsical about the things to which I put my mind. I am perfectly capable of ignoring all sorts of things that I should pay attention to and focusing with the intensity of a laser on some item that no one in the world, besides myself, thinks is important. And so it goes. My oblivion, it appears, is a feature, not a bug.

This was pointed out to me yesterday by my sister. David and I were at dinner with Joan, her husband Sandro, and their daughter, Nicole. We were talking about things to do in NYC, an inexhaustible topic, and I suggested that they consider the Metropolitan Opera at the holidays, knowing full well that they aren’t really aficionados. I mentioned it was Rigoletto, also knowing full well, that they love all things Italian. David poked me to stop scutching them. I said to Joan, my husband just poked me to stop scutching you. Joan replied, does he think I’ll be mad at you? or that you can’t handle that? -Maybe, I always pay attention to what you say. —
HAH, she said. I hate you, I
